On the morning of May 1, 2025, the Jersey City Hyatt Regency bustled with activity. Attendees from across the Eastern U.S. took in the view of the Hudson River before taking their seats for in-depth discussions of the region’s foremost geotechnical challenges. ICOP hosted the event, which was sponsored by DuroTerra and Geopier®, a division of CMC.

The Northeast Technical Workshop consisted of six sessions about ground improvement, rammed aggregate piers, rigid inclusions, liquefaction, and ductile iron piles. Presenters included ICOP team members and guest speakers. The 70+ professionals in attendance represented all facets of the industry: geotechnical experts, structural engineers, construction managers, developers, and more.

An In-Person Gathering of Engineering Experts

Vice President of Engineering Sharon Hartley, P.E., led the first session, titled “Design & Installation of Geopier Rammed Aggregate Piers®.” Her talk described the benefits and applications of this economical ground improvement method. Afterwards, she commented on the value of ICOP’s in-person gathering.

"
So many of the times that we’re communicating, it’s through emails or submittal comments, and we don’t really have the chance to interact face to face and talk through questions in a really candid way,” Sharon said. “It was a really great opportunity to get everyone in the same room."

Promoting Partnership

In addition to educational sessions, participants in the Northeast Technical Workshop valued the opportunity to build professional connections. Engineers and construction experts came together to discuss the challenges and opportunities inherent to geostructural projects.

Sharon Hartley weighed in, saying, “It was a great opportunity to talk about not only ground improvement design and applications, but how we can work together as geotechs, as structurals, as developers to work towards the best product.”

A Mainstay for the East Coast

Afterwards, attendees reflected on the Northeast Technical Workshop, calling the experience informative, engaging, and dynamic. While everyone walked away with something different, a common theme emerged: participants look forward to gathering again in the years to come.

In the words of Johnna Emanuel, P.E., ICOP’s New York Area Manager: “We wanted to make sure that no one left here today with any open questions. We wanted to give everybody as much information and share as much knowledge as we could, and it was a great success. It was an excellent, excellent event. We can’t wait to do it again.”
